The National Horticulture Mission has been launched as a centrally sponsored scheme to promote holistic growth of the horticulture sector through an area based regionally differentiated strategies. The scheme will be fully funded by the Government and different components proposed for implementation financially supported on the scales laid down. This scheme is implemented in 20 districts viz Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Cuddalore, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram. Nilgiris, Perambalur, Vellore, Pudukottai, Villupuram, Kanyakumari and Thanjavur. The scheme covers the crops viz Mango, Aonla, Banana, Cashew, Cocoa, Chillies, Turmeric, aromatic plants and flowers which are promoted through a cluster approach.
NHM TANHODA sponsored model nursery unit has been in operation at KVK, Sandhiyur since 2009. The Accreditation team from the National Horticulture Board, Gurgaon, Haryana visited the KVK Model nursery on 31.1.2013 and it was accreditated with single star rating. Separate mother plants blocks for mango is available for commercial varieties like Alphonso, Salem Bangalora, Neelum, Mallika, Himayudeen, Banganapalli and are maintained for graft production. Softwood grafting is being produced to cater the needs of the farmers of Salem District. New mother plant block for Himayudeen variety is planted. Rootstock mixture is prepared in controlled places like the shade net and the biocontrol agents like Pseudomonas and Trichoderma are added for the protection and health of the plants. Micro irrigation systems of irrigation are used for sowing in the nursery in shade nets.Aonla variety like NA7 is maintained as a part of the fruits nursery. Sapota PKM 1 mother block is maintained for approach grafting purpose. Guava Lucknow 49 is being layered and mother plants are maintained. Acid lime seedlings are planted in 2015. The Surveillance of the Accreditated NHM, MODEL NURSERY was carried out by the NHB team on April 2015 and approved by the team.
